Hybrid or battery electric technology must do more than promote fuel conservation and environmental stewardship. To make a business case, alternative powertrain systems must utilize the possibilities of electrification to address a wide array of total cost of ownership aspects, from productivity to safety.

This is the driving philosophy ArvinMeritor brings to the development of alternative powertrain systems.

Using our expertise as a systems integrator, ArvinMeritor is working with Wal-Mart Transportation and other partners to develop a hybrid diesel electric powertrain for the on-highway market. What separates our approach is combining the benefits of series and parallel hybrid systems into one highly integrated and reliable system.

As commercial vehicles transition from conventional engines and mechanical drivelines to electric and hybrid electric systems, ArvinMeritor is re-defining our role as drivetrain developers. While fuel efficiency is the primary benefit, we must also assist in our nation’s move to decrease our dependence on foreign oil through the expansion of dedicated alternative fueled vehicles. And we’re changing the ROI equation for alternative powertrains to include productivity, cargo capacity, ergonomics, and more.

Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) Powertrains

For low-mileage, light-duty applications, ArvinMeritor’s battery electric vehicle (BEV) powertrains use corner drive modules to instead of a driveline, transmission, and axle differential. Each module includes a traditional wheel-end package with disc brakes; an electric motor to drive the wheel and provide both regenerative braking and slip/traction control; and an electronically controlled pneumatic suspension with 9 inches of travel. This allows the vehicle to "kneel" to curb level, improving ergonomics for the driver and reducing the physical demands of loading and off-loading cargo: it’s one way our BEV powertrain allows the truck and driver to be more productive while meeting criteria for energy efficiency and zero emissions.

Zero Emissions Vehicle (ZEV) Capabilities

While delivering the common hybrid benefits of regenerative braking and engine idle reduction, this system also changes the fundamental requirements and operation of engines allowing the total powertrain to be optimized in ways not possible through conventional technologies. Furthermore, with a wide range of electric only drive modes, battery packs can be sized to deliver Zero Emissions Vehicle (ZEV) capabilities under many driving conditions.
